As partial satisfaction of the mitigation requirements for San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, SCE was required to create or substantially restore at least 150 acres of wetlands in the San Dieguito Lagoon in the cities of San Diego and Del Mar. The San Dieguito Wetlands Restoration Project includes the following elements:
1) creation or substantial restoration of 150 acres of tidal wetlands; 2) creation of Least Tern nesting sites; and 3) establishment of public trails. Construction on the wetlands restoration began in September 2006. Major construction of all significant features was completed in August 2012. The entire project footprint isapproximately 440 acres – including 115 acres of tidally influenced wetlands and 35 acres credit for maintaining the river inlet open into perpetuity. Mikhail Ogawa has served as construction engineer/manager for the project since construction began in 2006. |
